Filipinos are branded to be some of the greatest singers in the world. Time and again, we have seen how a Pinoy can conquer the stage and perform their hearts out. Not only that, they never fail to deliver chilling performances as well with their pitch perfect tones and powerful belting ranges.
From big international names like Lea Salonga and Jasmine Trias, all the way to the YouTube sensations like Charice and Alyssa Bonaobra, Filipinos have proven their caliber when it comes to the music scene. Just recently, a viral video of a teen named Maria Laroco has made the rounds online due to the tremendously great comments she got from X-factor judges during her audition with the song Purple Rain.
Just a couple of months later, another Pinay makes it to the headlines with an almost 4-chair turn during her blind auditions for The Voice US. The singer is named Radha, a Pinay college student in the United States, who sang her powerful rendition of Jesse J’s “Momma Knows Best.”
She started pretty strong, showing off her vocal capability, belting out high notes and sustaining the energy all throughout her audition piece. It was obvious that she was a strong contender as Kelly Clarkson was the only one who didn’t turn for her. Judges Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson, and Blake Shelton competed against each other toward being Radha’s coach.
But with Adam blocking Jennifer, the options were trimmed down to Blake and Adam—which as many show followers know, is a common scenario. Jennifer tells Adam that it wasn’t right for him to block her as she really wanted Radha to be on her team. But according to Adam, competition’s tough and he’s got to play the game too.
Adam was blown away by Radha’s performance that he didn’t even take long to decide whether he’ll turn for her. According to him, “I was so amazed by you – the way you perform, the control, the maturity. You omit this amazing vibe when you sing,” Meanwhile, Jennifer was stuck with no choice after being blocked, and just told Radha that she’s happy to see a voice like hers make it to a show like “The Voice.” She even tells Radha that she has outdone herself, and even called her little sister.
We later learned that Radha is no longer new to competitions like this. “My first big performance was during a Filipino festival. It was my first time doing a competition and I ended up winning and it taught me ‘you gotta keep on doing this Radha,” she shared.
At the end of it all, it came down to who she was going to choose for a coach, and it seemed like Adam’s scheming worked as Radha ended up picking him in the end.
