FACT: Female spiders eat male spiders after intercourse

According to its dictionary definition, spiders are eight-legged predatory arachnids that have fangs with toxicants for their victims. They also use their webs to trap their preys. They are considered to be one of the most common frightening creatures we get to see everywhere.

Fun fact about spiders, they aren’t all toxic. They are also not insects like what other people think. As stated above they are arachnids, eight-legged arthropods. Some other arachnids include scorpions, ticks, mites, among others. Another fact about spiders is that female spiders eat male spiders before, during, or after intercourse.

As if being frightening wasn’t enough, spiders are also known for their cannibalistic traits. According to Unilad, female spiders eat male spiders due to sexual dimorphism. Which to put it in simpler terms, means two genders of the same kind have different characteristics.

Compared to male spiders, female spiders tend to be bigger. This makes it easy for them to prey on male spiders after intercourse. According to scientists, the cannibalism theory explains how the male’s ‘evolutionary role’ is done once they are finished with the intercourse. Since they are unlikely to mate another female spider, they serve as a source of nutrition for the pregnant spider and her eggs.

In some cases, female spiders eat male spiders even before mating. This happens when a female does not get over her adolescent aggression which is common to all female spiders. During their adolescent aggression, they tend to eat anything that falls on their web.
