Students’ health and well-being is vital to their education. A minor discomfort can easily cause them to lose focus in their classes and lessons, in turn, their learning can be hampered.
This has been a concern of mother Beth Paulette from Virginia whose sons are high school students in King and Queen County, Virginia. She noticed that they would regularly get migraines after school.
At first, she thought that her sons’ migraines were caused by stress, but later she was convinced that they were not.
One day, her son sent her a photo of their cafeteria lunch that looked horrendous. She then found out that the food being served every day in her sons’ cafeteria was unpalatable and unhealthy. She now knew what caused her sons’ migraines.
Determined to stop this, she teamed up with local reporters, WTVR CBS 6, and took definitive action.

They soon found out that Beth’s sons weren’t alone experiencing migraines because of the food. They then sought out the help of King and Queen County schools Superintendent Dr. Stanley Jones.
Stanley promised a swift response and suspended the head of kitchen, Suzanne Gilbertson. But Suzanne denied her involvement in the production of the awful cafeteria food. She said that Stanley appointed a different employee responsible of the food.
Despite not being able to pinpoint the culprit, changes were soon implemented and healthier cafeteria food was served. The high school students in King and County never had to suffer from migraines from their lunches again.
Food is indeed important to students. With their stress piling up from tons of homework and quizzes, keeping a full stomach is imperative for their brains to function properly.
