Even the local celebrities here in the country can’t escape the strict policies of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). Once you fail to comply with the BIR’s policies and properly declare your income tax returns, the resulting dilemma will hound you all day and all night.
Here are the following celebrities whom the BIR hounded for!
The BIR filed a tax evasion case against this Brazilian model and showbiz personality last April 7, 2011. According to the BIR, Daiana Menezes didn’t file her income tax returns from 2007 to 2009.
In a press statement, the BIR said she received an amount of PHP 2,659,668.10 from 2007 to 2009. Moreover, her tax liability summed up to PHP 983,658.07.
However, she responded to the accusations through a text message: “I have been paying my taxes religiously.”
On January 31, 2013, the BIR filed charges against Ryan Bang for not paying his total tax liability worth PHP 1.82 million.
The BIR found out that the Korean TV host and actor wasn’t paying his tax obligations ever since he started his career in the showbiz industry from 2010 to 2011. He received an amount of PHP 852,274, and another PHP 2.06 million in 2011.
Kapuso star Solenn Heussaff was shocked when the BIR filed a PHP 3.6-million tax evasion case against her on April 4, 2013.
The authorities explained that she declared a wrong income tax returns in 2011, indicating that she had a gross income of PHP 6.73 million and taxable income of PHP 3.3 million.
They issued this statement:
“Heussaff’s under declaration is more than 30 percent and is a prima facie evidence of fraud.”
However, she immediately fixed the problem and said “get a good accountant. Try to understand the papers” in the end.

Zoren Legaspi was involved in a tax evasion case last May 8, 2014, for the wrong declaration of his income tax returns from 2010 to 2012.
Based on the data of the bureau, he declared PH P6.79 million in 2010 and PHP 1.82 million in 2012, but the BIR clarified that he had a total income of PHP 9.64 million and PHP 6.49 million in 2012.
Zoren Legaspi immediately expressed his will to fix the problem against the BIR.
Sen. Manny Pacquiao
The World Boxing Champion tasted the wrath of the BIR on November 24, 2013, after his triumph against the American boxer Brandon Rios. Moreover, the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) even ordered to freeze his bank deposits before the fight because of the tax evasion case worth PHP 2.2 billion against him.
Aside from that, the “Pambansang Kamao” failed to declare his income tax returns collected by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from 2008 to 2009, which summed up to USD 26 million.
In his defense, he explained that didn’t include his remittance in the ITR from the IRS because of the bilateral tax treaty of Manila and Washington.
On August 20, 2014, the Supreme Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against the BIR. Additionally, the Supreme Court Third Division issued an order against the decision of the CTA ordering the Pacquiao couple to post a cash bond worth PHP 3.2 billion or a surety bond worth PHP4 billion.
Moreover, the Supreme Court Second Division favored Manny Pacquiao to conduct a recomputation on his tax evasion case.
The BIR filed a tax evasion case against the actor for his negligence, including his production company called R Gutz Production Corporation, to pay taxes amounting to PHP 38.57 million in 2012.
Moreover, the BIR further filed other charges against the actor for his fraudulent activities including the wrong declaration of his Annual Income Tax Returns (ITR) and Value Added Tax (VAT) documents on August 17, 2017

He filed a counter-affidavit to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on the same day.
It was in 2005 when the BIR filed a tax evasion case against Richard Gomez for not paying his financial obligations from 2000 to 2003.
According to the BIR, he failed to declare his estimated earnings of PHP 1.8 million in 2001, PHP 1.02 million in 2002, and PHP 166,000 in 2003.

“When the BIR filed a case against me for tax evasion, at the same time nagbigay din sila ng amnesty and I was able to avail of that tax amnesty. So with that, sana makita ng DOJ na grinant ako ng BIR. Sana makita nila ‘yung merits ng case and sana nga matapos na kaagad.”
The Asia’s Songbird didn’t declare her earnings worth PHP 3.75 million from her endorsement with a food and beverage company. Moreover, she was accused of falsification of her income tax return way back in 2003.
Despite having proof from 2000 to 2002 that she submitted her income tax returns in Bulacan, there were no records showing that she paid her financial obligations in 2003. However, Roseann Balauag, a state prosecutor, said the case was premature in 2006 – absolving the singer.
Judy Ann Santos
The BIR filed charges against Judy Ann Santos in 2005 for her tax liability worth PHP 1.7 million. This happened in 2002 when she failed to comply with declaring her annual income tax return. Moreover, the CTA also filed a warrant of arrest against her in 2005.
It was only in January 2013 that the Supreme Court dismissed the tax evasion case against her.
