You might not know this, but there are as many spooky stories about seas as there are ghost stories based inland. There are some who claim that a ‘ghost ship’ has sailed around the world’s seas for 38 years – nearly 4 decades. Aside from the fact that it has been floating on the sea for almost four decades, what’s haunting is how it managed to do so without anyone on board.
According to Boredom Therapy, a 1,322 ton cargo ship named the “SS Baychimo” was launched back in 1914. The SS Baychimo became an infamous ghost ship after a series of events led its crew to abandon it on the sea. Little did they know that it would be sailing for another 38 years long after they have left it.
Originally called the “Ångermanelfven,” the ship was constructed in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was supposed to carry goods between Sweden and Hamburg. The ship was relocated to Great Britain under the Hudson Bay Company in 1921. The ship was rechristened the SS Baychimo and was sent over to Scotland.
The SS Baychimo then served as a shuttle for various items like weapons, tea, sugar, tobacco, and the like, between Canada and Scotland. Three years later, it was made to ship pelts and furs all over the globe.

In 1931, the ship unfortunately got snagged in an ice pack. Left with no choice, its crew members had to leave it and stayed in Alaska as they waited for the ice to break. However, after a few days of trying to sail it again, the ship got trapped in another ice pack. This time, its men had no choice but to be airlifted.
Some of its crew members stayed behind to wait until summer so they can sail the SS Baychimo back. However, on November 1931, the temperature dropped drastically, bringing in a huge blizzard. After the storm, the SS Baychimo was nowhere to be found.
Eventually, the ship was found again by its captain, but was thereafter rendered unseaworthy. Thus, the crew members salvaged whatever goods they could find, leaving the ship at the mercy of the seas.
Thirty-eight years later, the was spotted again floating in the Chukchi Sea in Alaska. This was the last reported sighting of the ship, in addition to the numerous times it was spotted in the past years.
In 2007, the Alaskan government ordered a search for the ship, floating or sunken, but the ‘ghost ship’ has yet to make its appearance again.
